Once is not enough: What effects can making thinking visible have on student learning?

During the spring of 2006, the 6th grade students at the Benjamin Banneker Charter Public School in Cambridge, MA had worked hard to develop mental models of particle behavior that could explain things like changes of state and chemical changes.

I, a science process enthusiast, wanted to find a way to honor their ongoing efforts at using models, hands-on experiences and demonstrations to construct useful explanations of the challenging concept of density. Causal Patterns in Density (Understandings of Consequence Project, Project Zero, and Harvard Graduate School of Education guided the instruction.)
