Making Student-Led Discussion Visible

School: Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School, Devens, MA

Documentation by Sarah Mayper and Tassia Thomas

How can we use documentation to make students? conversation and learning tangible and lasting in the classroom?

Two teachers from the Parker Charter Essential School used various methods of documentation to better capture seventh and eighth grade students? spoken insights, which tend to be fleeting and under-appreciated by other students, in a way which furthered whole-group and individual learning. In ?teacherless? text-based seminars, students learn from and with each other; we wanted their spoken words to be more available to the group and individuals as a means to understanding complex questions. In doing so, students reflected on the process of group learning through discussion, and their own contributions to it.
