Documentation by Heather Nord and Sarae Pacetta

Town Hall Meeting: Behind the Scenes

From March until May, two preschool classrooms at the Lee Academy, a 2-year-old pilot school outside of Codman Square in Dorchester, documented their experiences with our school?s Town Hall Meetings (bi-weekly all-school gatherings). There are 12 or 13 three- four- and five-year-olds in each class, and two teachers. One class performs at each Meeting, and both of our classes performed during this time frame.

We liked the idea of our documentation tell the story of our Town Hall Meetings, and we also wanted it to be prospective, we wanted future learning to come out of it. We decided that Heather?s group would reflect on performing and the use what they learned about feeling comfortable on stage to pass advice onto other classes. Sarae?s group would create a book to pass onto other classes about how to put on a good show.

Heather?s group?s aspect of the project went pretty much as planned, but a month later when Sarae?s group got ready to perform, things didn?t run as smoothly. In the end, we realized that both of our groups were focused mainly on the feelings around performing: for Heather?s group, seeing their families in the audience and feeling love from them was very important. For Sarae?s group, feelings of confusion, nervousness, and social stress took center stage, taking us down a new path.
