Making Learning Visible: Understanding, Documenting, and Supporting Individual and Group Learning

Sketching an Exhibition is a set of questions designed to help conceptualize how documentation of learning can be made public. While the first steps of documentation are almost always for internal use—to be shared with children and adults in the learning environment—it can also be helpful to imagine exhibitions for a larger community. We suggest working with colleagues to answer these questions as a provocative exercise, whether or not the exhibition is ever actually created. We offer these questions in the hope that you will use them in a flexible, creative fashion and have fun thinking about learning in this way.

? What story of individual and group learning in your setting do you want to share?

? Who would be the featured people in your story?

? What aspect of individual and group learning in this story will you focus on?

? What moments/events would you want to document?

? What media might you use to document this learning?

? What objects could you include in this exhibit?

? How might you represent multiple perspectives in this exhibit and whose perspectives would you try to represent?

? What might be a good title for the exhibit?

? Where could you set up this exhibit?

? Who would you hope the audience to be?

? What idea regarding individual or group learning would you hope to communicate?
